A 12 year old grade four pupil at Shikoswe School in Kafue on Tuesday afternoon drowned in a nearby dam situated behind Deniz Blocks in Shikoswe area.

Kafue Police Officer In-Charge Jason Lungu confirmed the incident to Kafue Times in a telephone interview.

Lungu named the girl as Lister Mweemba who drowned in a nearby dam while she was swimming after knocking off from school.

The local Police chief told KT that Lister who was in the company of her friends tried to entice her friends for a swim in the dam locally known as “Chimbotela” but her friends refused because they feared to be beaten by their parents if they knew they had swam in the said dam.

However her friends walked with Lister to the dam which was full of water and the deceased who had resolved to swim dived in the water and started swimming as her friends watched her.

Suddenly, Lister started struggling to swim and was seen gasping.

Sensing danger, Lister’s friends called for help from a passerby who quickly alerted the Fire Brigade and Marine Police who rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve the body.

Lister was rushed to Kafue General Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited in the Kafue General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
