13% Failure Rate Recorded In This Years GCE Examination

MINISTER of Education says a total of 16, 960 candidates out of the 124,171 that sat for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) have failed the examination.

Speaking at a media briefing to announce the results, Douglas Syakalima said this gives a national failure rate of 13.66%.

Mr Syakalima said the national failure rate has since increased from 10.50% in 2020 to 13.66% in 2021.

He added that 4,436 candidates that sat for the examination have obtained GCE certificates.

Mr Syakalima further said of the 39,323 males that sat for the examination, 1,618 males obtained GCE certificates.

He noted that out of the 84,848 female that entered for the examination, 2,878 managed to obtain GCE certificates.

“A total of one hundred and two thousand seven hundred and fifteen obtained statement of results,” he said.

“Let me commend the ECZ for conducting credible examinations amidst the out break of the Covid-19 and the general elections that where held,” he said.

And Mr Syakalima said the Examination Council of Zambia (ECZ) has amended the rules for the award of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) with effect from the 2021 GCE examination.

The Mininster explained that under the new rules and conditions GCE Certificates will only be awarded to candidates whose subject and grades meet the standard of the award of the school Certificate.

He said Eastern Province recorded the highest absenteeism rate at 8.40% while Western Province recorded the lowest absenteeism rate at 4.37%.
