A couple from Lusaka’s Mtendere Compound has been arrested for manufacturing counterfeit maize seed.
Cephas Siwakwi aged 42 and Adele Nakawala, 35, have since been charged with Counterfeiting Trademarks, contrary to Section 377 of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, notes that on 30th November, 2023 a concerned member of the public informed a Seed Officer under Ministry of Agriculture based in Chilanga that people were seen manufacturing counterfeit maize seed.
Hamoonga explains that Police Officers who visited the scene found bags of suspected counterfeit maize grains painted in different colours of red, green, and blue.
A green liquid substance suspected to be the paint used in processing the seed where also found in addition to two sealing machines, a stitching machine, 114 empty bags of 5-kilogram branded Seedco and, 109 bags of 10 kilograms branded Zamseed.
