ECZ GIVES UPDATE ON 2021 PREPARATIONS

The Commission held a Stakeholder Engagement with political parties at Mulungushi International Conference Centre this morning.

The meeting dubbed the ECZ/Political Parties Liaison Committee Meeting brought together many political parties to look at the electoral processes that the Commission is undertaking in preparation for the 2021 General Elections. The Agenda included the unveiling of the newly appointed Electoral Group of Eminent Persons (8), Voter Registration, Prison Voting, Results Management, Nomination Fees and the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Regulations.

The meeting was opened by the Chairperson, Hon. Justice Esau E. Chulu, who among other things called for a new Voters Register “to ensure a realistic voter turnout, accurate election planning and logistics, as well as ensure that over 4 Million new eligible voters, that have become eligible to vote since 2016, are included on the Register.”

During the meeting the Chief Electoral Officer, Mr Kryticous Nshindano, gave an update on various electoral processes. Among the updates was the proposal to revise the nomination fees for all election categories for the 2021 General Elections. This proposal was received with mixed reactions by the stakeholders.

It was, therefore, Resolved that the political parties should come up with proposals on the new fees that were presented. The political parties would give their proposals to the Commission within one week.
