The African Union (AU) has responded to a letter written to them by the United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Mr. Hakainde Hichilema complaining of alleged “unfair conduct” of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in the voter verification process.In their response the AU reminded Mr. Hichilema that Zambia’s record of peace and stability continues to be a shining example to the world at large and that they believe Zambia will continue to be a beacon of peace in Africa even after the August 12th elections.
The AU also stated that Zambia is known as the safest and most peaceful country on the Africa Continent and prides itself with its friendly and hospitable people and that since it’s independence in 1964, Zambia has had five democratically and peaceful elections and has changed governments through the ballot.The AU added that the political stability Zambia enjoys has earned it great respect among countries around the world; which refer to it as ‘The Icon of Peace.Mrs.
Wynne Musabayana, the Head of Communication at the African Union also advised Mr. Hichilema to thoroughly exhaust all domestic avenues of dispute resolutions before rushing to the international community and assured him that they are confident Zambia will once again hold free and fair elections.
