Hyena devours face of ten year old boy
A 10-YEAR-OLD boy of Malowa village under Chieftainess Mwanjawanthu in
Petauke, Eastern Province, has been killed by a hyena, which ate his face as well as shoes after killing him.
The boy, identified as Leonard Banda, came face to face with the hyena, which he mistook for a dog in the bush while herding cattle.
Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) acting senior ranger for Petauke Management Unit Likando Imangolwa said the incident happened on Sunday around 17:00 hours when the victim was killed by a hyena that he mistook for a dog and four other boys were coming from herding cattle.
Mr Imangolwa said the victim thought the hyena was just a dog wandering in the bush before it charged at him as the other boys ran away to report the incident at the village.
“The community members who went to rescue the boy found that he was being eaten as they had no weapons to approach the wild animal,” he said.
And elderly man, Roundus Tembo, tried to approach the hyena behind with a stick as he tried to rescue the boy but he ended up with an injured shoulder.
Mr Imangolwa said the hyena was killed on Monday around 7:00 hours by the community after attacking another person.
After conducting a post-mortem on the hyena, officers discovered some hair, bones and shoes belonging to the boy.
The remains of the victim were buried on Monday in chieftainess Mwanjawanthu’s area.
