A mine in Sinazongwe, Southern Province, has been accused of buying 60,000 square metres of land at K120,000 from locals and is now set to relocate them.

The investor allegedly bought the 60,000 square metres at K2 per square metre.

Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) has since urged Government to investigate this allegation because it amounts to exploitation.

CEJ executive director Maggie Mwape said her organisation appreciates the importance and role of investors in the economic development process of the country.

Ms Mwape, however, stated that exploitation of the vulnerable indigenous people should not be entertained after over 50 years of Zambia’s independence.

She urged communities not to be quick when engaging in land negotiations with investors.
