Sinazongwe man escapes police custody month after murdering wife

A FORMER ministry of health accountant who was arrested for murdering his wife barely a month ago is among 14 detainees that escaped Maamba Police Station in Sinazongwe, Southern Province.

Kanyemba Chikanya, 45 killed his 40 year old wife, Cheriser Haloongo, a home economics teacher at Sinazongwe Day Secondary School on May 3, last month.

On Sunday, Chikanya along with 13 others which includes eight remandees and five convicts facing various criminal offences engineered there way out of custody.

The only suspect among the escapees is Frank Jani, who is charged with murder,
while the remandees are Enock Munakayumbwa facing a charge of child stealing, Chikanya (murder), Spaigo Mweembe (murder), Oliver Sikapila , Evans Ndiyo, Moses Matako, all charged for stock theft.

Others are Trust Chikonka who was in custody for theft and Bernard Majata for defilement.

The convicts are Moswell Mupika, Chipo Simwatachela, Nesho Munenge, Isaac Sikajaka and Siakulya Akila, who were
found guilty of various offences.

Zambia Police Service spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident to Zambia Daily Mail yesterday stating incident happened on Sunday around 14:30 hours.

“They escaped from Maamba Police Station after cutting the burglar bar of the cell that is on the cell grill door;” Hamoonga was quoted by Zambia Daily Mail.

“A hacksaw blade is suspected to have been used in the act.”

investigations have been instituted and a man-hunt for the escapees was launched by police.

Hamoonga appealed to the public to report any of the escapees to the nearest police station once they are seen.
