Teenagers Dump Babies In Toilets

One claims she was unaware about her pregnancy
UNAWARE that she was expecting, a 16-year-old girl of Mtendere Township in Lusaka accidentally delivered a baby in a pit latrine while answering the call of nature.
And a four-day-old infant is being treated at Monze Mission Hospital in Southern Province after its 20-year-old mother dumped it in a Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church toilet.
The Mtendere baby was retrieved alive by members of the public yesterday around 06:00 hours, who rushed it to hospital.
In an interview, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said around 03:00 hours yesterday, the juvenile mother had a running stomach and went to use the pit latrine outside.
“As she was in the toilet helping herself, something fell,” Mr Hamoonga said.
Without realising that it was a baby, she went back to sleep, but she was bleeding.
At 05:55 hours, a resident, Prince Musonda, who was going for work, found women and children talking about someone having dumped a baby in a pit latrine.
He went to check in the pit latrine and saw the baby crying.
It was then that Mr Musonda asked the men in the vicinity to look for picks and shovels to help him break the toilet.
“He (Mr Musonda) told the men to hold his legs and lower him into the toilet and that is how he retrieved the baby.
“He rushed to the police, where he was given a medical report to take the baby to the clinic,” Mr Hamoonga said.
When the juvenile’s elder sister went to her room to wake her up, she noticed some blood on her body.
Asked if she had used the toilet, the juvenile agreed.
“Upon hearing that, she took the younger sister to Kalikiliki Police Post. After being interviewed, it was learnt that
the juvenile did not know that she was pregnant,” he said.
She was later taken to Mtendere Clinic, where she was examined and had the placenta removed.
The juvenile and her baby were then referred to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital for observation.
