ZNS doubles efforts to deal with Kamwala South floods

The Zambia National Service (ZNS) has doubled its machinery on the ground in Kamwala residential area to alleviate flooding which has taken a toll on residents in the area.

ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi said two more exacavators have been added to the initial two to speed up the works.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon after touring Kamwala South to appreciate the situation, Lt Gen Solochi said flooding in the area has reduced following the opening up of a canal that is feeding into the Bombay Drainage.

”We have doubled our equipment on site to speed up the works, with additional equipment we will work at full capacity even in the midst of rains.

Most of the flooded houses have been cleared and water levels have reduced, our people can now take a sigh of relief,” he said.

Lt Gen Solochi commended officers and soldiers deployed on the ground for their dedication and commitment to duty.

He said ZNS is always ready to supplement Government’s efforts of quickly reaponding to disasters when called upon.

”Our officers mobilised on site just after the Presidential directive that ZNS should respond to the flooding situation in Kamwala South and alleviate the suffering of the people,” the Commander said.

Lt Gen Solochi also said ZNS will continue to ensure provision of quality works and services to the citizens.

And ZNS Chief of Land Development Branch (LDB) Brigadier General Japhen Mukanda thanked Command for the support it has rendered to address the flooding situation.

”We want to assure the Commander that we will do quality work as expected, the additional machinery will give us impetus to speed up the works and complete on time,” Brig Gen Mukanda said.

Meanwhile Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit ( DMMU) Regional Coordinator for Lusaka District Kangacepe Zulu has commended ZNS for the quick response.

Mr Zulu said DMMU will continue engaging various stakeholders to respond to disasters.

”DMMU will continue working in a multi-sectoral approach with other stakeholders and partners.

We are happy with the works done by ZNS through the leadership of the Commander Lt Gen Solochi, we have seen that the institution is equal to the task,” He said.

ZNS was engaged two weeks ago to address the flooding situation in Kamwala South working in collaboration with DMMU and Lusaka City Council.
